US turns to cooperation and certification for solutions
10th July 2008 by Alex Briggs
The US Department of Health and Human Services announced a two part pilot project to help improve food safety. The first step involves closer cooperation with European and Australian trading partners. The focus here is on improving quality throughout a product’s life cycle, while simultaneously minimising risk.
The second initiative is a third-party certification pilot program involving aquacultured (farm-raised) shrimp. The project is designed to help HHS/FDA learn how to evaluate third-party certification programs and implement them in the field — a key part of leveraging the additional resources of the private sector and other regulators.
