The UK government’s support for biofuels risks failing to deliver significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and could be environmentally damaging, the Royal Society, the UK’s leading scientific academy, said yesterday, writes Ed Crooks . The society called on the UK and the EU to reform biofuels policy to give more support to fuels that delivered greater cuts in emissions.

China has agreed to phase out incandescent lightbulbs, according to this article.
The switch could mitigate 500 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, equal to about half the climate-warming emissions of Germany.
The European Union is scheduled to “choice edit” out inefficient lightbulbs within a decade.
China currently produce 70% of the world’s lightbulbs.

Those were the key elements of last night’s Powering the UK event in Manchester. Greenpeace hosted the event at Manchester City’s stadium. The club is set to unveil a very large wind turbine just outside the stadium in the coming months, working with Ecotricity and the Manchester City Council to provide power to the stadium as well the surrounding neighborhoods.

Only through clear strategies that are informative and transparent to both business and consumers, backed by full government support and pressure, communicated by all types of media can there be a concerted global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Businesses having systems to measure data in place that are credible and verifiable will lead to the consumer trust that will change their buying habits.

Recently, Manchester City FC installed a wind turbine in their stadium grounds. When it is fully operational next year, it will supply enough energy to power the stadium and thousands of nearby homes.
