Sustainability and the 2012 Olympics

15th February 2007 by Simon Emeny

I attended a standards writing meeting this week - yawn you may say - but actually it was very interesting (in parts). The meeting was about a new standard BS8901 which is about Sustainable Events Management.

Basically the standard is intended to provide a specification for certification of events, event managment companies and event industry suppliers based on their recognition and action on issues of sustainability. I am not going to lecture on the ethics of sustainability, personally I think that introducing a culture of sustainability and minimising the negative effects of our lives on our wider environment is a good thing.

My main thoughts on BS8901, which is a daughter standard of BS8900 and related to ISO 26000 is that it is being “rushed” through. Why? Because the 2012 London Olympics stated in their bid that they would be the most sustainable. They have lots of good ideas in the bid document, all very laudable.

Why then was the representative from LOCOG/ODA absent from the standards meeting?
