New white paper shows Chinese food exports safest in world

17th September 2007 by Alex Briggs

An article on a new white paper has shown that Chinese food exports are the safest in the world, with the EU accepting 99.8%, the US 99.1% and Japan accepting 99.42% (better than the EU and the US rates of acceptance for Japan).

With the recent food safety scares originating largely in China, the Chinese government watchdog has put new regulations in place that as of September 1, 2007, all food exports must carry labels to show they have have passed inspections. Further, it is expected that by 2010, 50% of all small food producers would go out of business, due in part to the stringent new food safety standards.

The new information coming from the Chinese government is in contrast to a press conference in July, which was a rare admission of difficulties by the Chinese authorities,

“As a developing country, China’s food and drug supervision work began late and its foundations are weak. Therefore, the food and drug safety situation is not something we can be optimistic about”.
