LRQA Business Assurance welcomes launch of new Energy Management System (EnMS) Standard – ISO 50001

15th June 2011

With energy one of the most critical challenges facing the international community, the June publication of the ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems (EnMS) standard has generated a wealth of interest globally. Edwin Pinero, the ISO 50001 chairperson (and a former LRQA ISO 14001 assessor), has stated “ISO 50001 could influence up to 60% of the world’s energy demand.”

ISO 50001 is a voluntary international standard and will provide public and private sector organisations with the tools to create an EnMS that will increase energy efficiency, reduce costs , improve energy performance and reduce organisational risk .

The standard will be available on the ISO Website www.iso.org on 15 June. ISO 50001 is based on the ISO management systems model (Plan, Do, Check, Act) familiar to more than a million organisations worldwide, enabling the optional seamless integration of ISO 50001 into existing management system standards including quality, environmental, health & safety, food safety and information security.

Mike James, Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Managing Director commented; “Global demand for energy is set to rise exponentially in line with population growth and an increasing middle class population. Against this background and amid increasing concerns over energy security, countries are basing their future plans on a range of energy sources including coal, oil, gas, nuclear and renewable. However, a significant element in all future calculations are large planned improvements in energy efficiency and therefore ISO 50001 is set to make a major contribution in helping to bring this about.”
