International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Mandates Efficiency Standards for Carbon Emissions
18th July 2011 by Madlen King
On Friday a committee of the IMO approved changes to existing regulations to mandate energy efficiency tools that have until now been applied on a voluntary basis, Point Carbon reports. The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) will result in ships built from 2015-2019 improving their efficiency by 10%, increasing to 20% from 2020-2024 and 30% post 2024.
The IMO’s committee continues to deliberate market-based measures, to further reduce emissions, whilst the EU continues to state that the maritime industry will be brought into the EUETS in phase 3 (2013-2020) if actions to reduce emissions from shipping are not forthcoming.
