Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001 Certification – Recorded Webinar

11th September 2009

The latest in the LRQA Business Assurance webinar series, “Environmental Management Systems and ISO 14001 Certification” featured client case studies from both key European and US clients.

In addition, the Lloyd Register Group’s leading Climate Change expert, Dr Anne-Marie Warris provided an up-close look at ISO 14001. Dr Warris is currently the chairperson of the ISO Technical Committee responsible for the development of ISO Environmental Management Systems Standards. Following the Question and Answer session of each webinar, Steve Williams, LRQA’s Business Assurance Manager, led an in-depth discussion on the most important aspects and clauses of ISO 14001. Tom Idle, editor of Sustainable Business Magazine and one of the UK’s leading experts on climate change, was the chairman for both webinar sessions.

In the first session, 09:30 UK time, ALcontrol Laboratories, one of Europe’s leading environmental and food testing organisations, presented a 30-minute case study on their ISO 14001 EMS and on the benefits of being LRQA certified.

“Certification with LRQA doesn’t cost, it pays. Working with LRQA and getting certified to ISO 14001 has meant cost savings to ALcontrol that have repaid the cost of certification ten fold.”

The agenda featured a 20-minute update on the current and possible future role of ISO 14001 for organisations from Dr Warris. This was followed by ALcontrol’s case study and then the Question and Answer session with the four speakers making up the expert panel. This provided the audience with the opportunity to find out more about how ISO 14001 could directly help their organisations. With over 15 questions being asked of the panel, it was clear that the case study had generated a lot of interest in the tangible benefits of ISO 14001 implementation and certification. Steve Williams then finished off the webinar with a 20-minute look at two of the key clauses in ISO 14001 as well as offering insight into the key aspects of the standard. The afternoon session followed the same agenda, with Charles Souders from McNeil PPC, a division of Johnson & Johnson and the leader in the consumer oral health and whitening market, providing the case study. The Question and Answer session featured over 25 audience questions, most of which were answered during the session.

David Doherty, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager at ALcontrol Laboratories, stated.

More than 140 attendees from 25 nations were represented in the audience over the two sessions, with the USA and France having the largest amount of attendees. Also worth noting is the strong turnout from South America, with over 20 delegates from five nations. A strong mix of large, global corporations and niche, smaller organisations attended the free sessions. The strong audience participation, the expertise of the Lloyd’s Register presenters and the testimonials provided by both LRQA clients as part of their case studies all contributed to make the two sessions an innovative way of communicating the benefits of LRQA’s services from a client perspective.
