Climate Change letter to heads of state

21st September 2007 by Anne-Marie Warris

Climate change issues remain on the agenda of major business organisations such as IETA (International Emission Trading Association). In preparation for the upcoming key meetings to negotiate the climate targets and processes beyond 2012, IETA has issued an open letter (see below next paragraph).

It is a positive to see that member led organisations with a substantial number of carbon emitters in its membership from across the world takes this type of initiative.

Open Letter to the Heads of State and Government of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

Business Calls for Clear Outcomes from Climate Change Negotiations

There are a series of climate change meetings scheduled from September through to December as negotiators make preparations for the 13th Conference of the Parties (COP-13) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 3rd Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP-3) in Bali, Indonesia, from 3-14 December 2007. These meetings include a high-level event on 24th September called by the UN Secretary-General and a 2-day meeting in Washington under the White House Initiative for major emitting countries. These meetings are all vital stepping-stones to achieving an agreement for the post-2012 period, when the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol ends.

Our organization, and its one hundred and seventy members, urge all countries to use all these forthcoming meetings as opportunities to gain global consensus on the way forward to achieving a comprehensive global agreement, involving all nations and regions to combat the risks of climate change.

COP-13, in Bali, must be seen as an opportunity to provide business with the clarity that it needs as to the nature, and the pathway towards, a transparent stable, regulatory framework for the post-2012 regime. Only through such an outcome can business be provided with the predictability that it requires to continue investments in research, development and deployment of new and existing technologies to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, improve energy efficiency, and ensure the continuity of the rapidly growing GHG market which is one of the key tools in the efforts to combat climate change.

Yours truly,

Andrei Marcu
President and CEO
