China Climate Change Resolution
3rd September 2009 by Madlen King
On the 100th day count down to the international climate change summit in Copenhagen, China’s Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed a resolution stating that it will take steps to cut emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Whilst this resolution has no binding effect on China’s Communist Party, this is a great step forward for a country that has one of the world’s largest contributions to climate change as it will influence political decision making.
The content of the resolution, Point Carbon reports, requires the country to promote energy-efficient technology and products, boost its use of renewable energy, increase recycling, promote forestry carbon sequestration, control greenhouse gas emissions and make ecological construction a top priority.
This juncture for China is a very positive sign for potential progress with international action on climate change and the talks at Copenhagen in December.
