Carbon Expo Update – Day 2

2nd June 2011

One of the opening presentations of the morning saw Henry Derwent, President IETA expand on the issue of ‘Climate Finance’ – one of the key buzzwords circulating around the conference. Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Carbon Finance are integral parts of Climate Finance and this is the notion that there are other forms of income streams that should be engaged with in order to achieve a potential financial outcome from carbon mitigation.

At the LRQA Stand in the main exhibitor area, Luis Carneiro Filardi, Climate Change Manager, LRQA Latin America commented that due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of CDM projects post 2012, LRQA is experiencing a surge in demand for CDM validation projects to be completed before this timeline. Enquiries are coming in from Project Developers based worldwide and framework agreements are in the process of being negotiated.

Midday saw a presentation on Standardised Baselines – Unlocking the Carbon Market Potential. Standardised baselines are seen as a promising means to unlock the carbon market potential in under-represented regions, project types and for scaling up of mitigation actions to lower the greenhouse gas emissions. The recent CMP request to the CDM Executive Board to support the development of standardised baselines in consultation with designated national authorities and to prioritise their application to least developed countries, small island developing states and regions and project types with low participation in CDM underscores the importance of standardised approaches to baseline setting and cost effective monitoring of mitigation actions in extending the reach of CDM.
